Know your strengths

Before you start applying for roles you should conduct somewhat of an internal audit. Spend some time on completing a strengths analysis to identify your primary selling points. You can do this via self-reflection, consulting with colleagues and friends or there are several tools and exercises that can help with this. It is important to be keenly aware of your own uniqueness, skills and positive attributes, so that you can commence the job seeking process with confidence and clarity about what you have to offer.

Know what you want in a job and an employer

Apply for a job because you really do want it, not just because it is just a good fit for your background. If you are not passionate about the role and it doesn’t inspire or excite you, the role might not be completely fulfilling for you.

Utilise Social Media and Networking Opportunities

Social media is a free and simple tool to maximize your job seeking activities and possibilities. Utiilse media such as Linked In, Facebook and Twitter, use job search engines and be sure to capitalize on networking opportunities.

Respond specifically to the criteria listed in the job ad

If particular skills and attributes are listed in the job ad this means the employer wants you to meet or at least address those criteria in your application.

Tailor your resume and cover letter to each job

It is important to modify your resume for each application. Yes this takes time but it demonstrates effort, attention to detail and genuine interest in the position you are applying for.

Make a good impression

Present yourself professionally in person and in writing. Be punctual, polished but always remember to be yourself and to smile.

Do your homework
